This is a 95-minute 2015 lecture plus about 25 additional minutes from an earlier lecture by Dr. Richard Wolff, who is an economist and Professor Emeritus at the University of Massachusetts. He has degrees from Harvard, Stanford and Yale, but split from the mainstream economic stance several decades ago and has been studying and lecturing on capitalism and its alternatives ever since. In this lecture, he explores the initial Great Depression and how we recovered from it as well as covering the current depression, which started in 2008. He explains how this depression is different from the earlier one, how we are not recovering this time and where we are headed in the near future. He introduces a number of alternative economic plans, especially focusing on the democratic version of capitalism known as cooperatives. In the follow-up material from the earlier lecture, he covers the Mondragon Cooperative of Northern Spain that is run by the Basque people since the 1950s and has become the largest and most successful cooperative in the world.
