Censorship by YouTube and Others, part 1
For the first time, I had a video removed by YouTube.
This is a great case study, so I’ll go into details.
I posted a video in Mar.
The title was “Coronavirus espanol vit C”.
In the description, I put “I don’t know who produced this video, but I think that the info might be helpful.”
This was a video that I had stumbled upon. I was not able to find who made the video, but the presenter was hoping to make info available and to have the video disseminated.
I made the video unlisted, because I didn’t want anyone to find it until I was ready to talk about it.
I sent the link to one friend for review.
A month later, the YouTube analytics showed that the video had 2 views. That makes sense. I viewed it after posting to verify that it was working. And one friend viewed it once. No one else could find it because I had it unlisted.
In May, I got an email from YouTube saying “…Your video Coronavirus espanol vit C was flagged to us for review. Upon review, we’ve determined that it violates our guidelines and we’ve removed it from YouTube. …” That is very vague. The best clarification in the email is “YouTube doesn’t allow content that encourages or promotes violent or dangerous acts that have an inherent risk of serious physical harm or death.”
I question who flagged the video to YouTube, how it was reviewed, which guideline it violates, who decided to remove the video and why.
It is not possible that anyone flagged the video to YouTube for two reasons. First, the video was unlisted, so no one could find it. Second, the YouTube analytics shows now that the video had only 2 views. Since I know who those 2 views were from, it is not possible that anyone could have viewed the video in order to flag it to YouTube.
It is not possible that the video was reviewed. If it had been reviewed, there would be at least a third view. Since there is not a third view, it is not possible that anyone reviewed the video.
I anticipate that I will never be told who decided to remove the video nor why. Based on info I’ve heard from other YouTube publishers as well as content curators for other platforms, I speculate that there was not actually a living man or woman who made this decision. I speculate that YouTube has changed algorithms running its bots aiming to censor anything that contradicts the WHO or whoever YouTube chooses to support, and that a bot removed this video based on the title without viewing the video.
This is the end of part 1 of 3. Please continue to read part 2 at Coronavirus COVID-19 Censorship by Youtube and Others, Part 2.
